Board of Advisors of the Center for Arab-West Understanding
Function:
Members of the Board of Advisors support the ideals of the Center for Arab-West Understanding (CAWU) and promise to help with the realization of those ideals as much as possible. The ideals of CAWU are detailed in the mission statement. Members of the CAWU Board of Advisors also pledge to apply these ideals in their own work.
Members of the Board of Advisors provide advice and expert commentary, both solicited and unsolicited. It is characteristic for CAWU that the members of the Board of Advisors come from as many different backgrounds (cultural, faith and national) as possible, making it a forum where many different opinions meet in mutual respect.
The profile of a board member:
- He/she has a wide expertise in one or more fields covered by CAWU and its electronic publication Arab-West Report (AWR)
- He/she believes in the need to provide a common understanding between the Arab world and the West and supports the AWR mission statement, advocate respect for people with different opinions and convictions, however different or even conflicting those ideas may be with what they themselves believe. Showing respect does not mean agreeing with one another. Members of the Board of Advisors believe differences should be expressed in a rational and calm manner. They also believe supreme effort should be made to express the convictions of the other in a way one sees oneself. In the practice of AWR reporting, this means that texts about any person's or group's conviction should ideally be presented to that person or a representative from that group who needs to recognize them selves or their group in that text.
- Members of the Board of Advisors focus on points of common understanding and are willing to apply the same non-denominational criteria that are used to criticize expressions in another culture to their own culture. Members of the Board believe the current polarization of the Arab world and West could be broken if people were better informed.
- Members of the Board of Advisors are required to submit their name and brief introduction to CAWU. The introduction is placed in AWR. Their names are listed in each issue of AWR.
