Interviews Islamist Movements in 2013

Researchers from the Center for Arab-West Understanding (CAWU) contributed to the creation of an academic book on the role of Islamist movements in Egypt in 2013, the year in which the Egyptian government transitioned from an Islamist president to a non-Islamist interim president. New presidential elections later followed.

The interviews are unique historical documents because they were mostly conducted prior to President Mursī being deposed. At the time of the interviews, no-one knew that Mursī would be deposed. The interviews are also important texts because Islamists at the time were accessible to researchers for interviews. Such access to Islamist perspectives was more difficult to obtain prior to January 25, 2011 and after July 3, 2013.

25 of these interviews have been fully transcribed. The transcripts, along with their accompanying recordings have been placed in the Arab-West Report database. All interviewees agreed that the interviews be recorded and made available for transcription and publication. Researchers have consulted each interviewee to provide their agreement with the text of the transcript. Several interviewees gave their approval, two asked not to make the recordings public, while others never responded, most likely because they were too occupied with the political events unfolding at the time. Researchers concluded that two other interviews are too senstive and also these recordings are, therefore, not accesible in the public domain.
