Invitation to forum: 'New Voices for Egyptian Women'

AWR, Cairo, October 12, 2014

Dear subscribers, we are delighted to invite you to this month’s Forum meeting entitled ‘New Voices for Egyptian Women’ which will be hosted by the researcher Mette Toft Nielsen. Mette will be outlining the parameters of her research conducted with Aalborg University in Denmark and the NGO Kenana for Development and Women Empowerment in Egypt.

In 2013 a Thompson Reuters Foundation report concluded that Egypt had become the worst country for women in the Arab World in regards to “violence against women, reproductive rights, treatment of women within the family, their integration into society and attitudes towards a woman’s role in politics and the economy.” This has been the product of “a backlash against women’s rights [that] emerged in in post-revolutionary Egypt” (Dawoud 2012: 160).

Subtitled: ‘A Project with and about Women in Egypt, post 25 January Revolution’ the one-year project aims to engage 300 women from various regions and sections of society in Egypt through interviews and workshops to develop an acknowledgement and understanding of women’s importance in Egyptian society. The aim is to develop the skills of Egyptian women to allow them to “participate in the public debate in Egypt," and "have an influence on the post-revolutionary society, especially in matters related to women’s rights.”

Join us at 7.30pm on Wednesday 15th October at the CAWU office just off Midan Sawares and the 4th floor, nr. 90 Street 14b, Maadi.

If you have any questions see the CAWU website, the project Facebook page or email [email protected].
