The Grand Imam conveyed his congratulations to the Archbishop of Canterbury on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his taking up office. He assured him that the Azhar was paying great attention to inter-religious dialogue which is part of the doctrine of the Qur’an.
The Grand Imam of the Azhar Dr. Mohammed Sayyed Tantawi sent a message to Dr. Carey, the Archbishop of Canterbury in England. The message was delivered by Dr. Ali Al-Samman, an advisor to the Grand Imam, during his meeting with him today.
In his message the Grand Imam conveyed his congratulations to the Archbishop on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of his taking up office. The Grand Imam
also wrote that the Azhar was paying great attention to "Dialogue between Religions," its principles and thoughts, because dialogue is part of the doctrine of the Holy Qur’an.
The Archbishop visited Egypt and met with the Grand Imam in November 1999. At that time he expressed his desire to enter into an agreement between the Church of England and the Honorable Azhar, through the Azhar Permanent Committee for Inter religious Dialogue.
Dr. Ali Al-Samman, deputy head of the Azhar Permanent Committee, is doing research on the "Dialogue between Heavenly Religions," its thoughts and headlines, to establish a joint committee between the Azhar and the Church of England.
To this end, a delegation from the Church of England will arrive next Sunday to put forward the final plan for this agreement.
It is known that the Grand Imam and the Azhar are stressing, in their relations with other religious institutions, the importance of opposing injustice, and are forbidding any assault on people’s legal rights.
Tomorrow Dr. Al-Samman will meet with the representatives of the Islamic Communities in Europe, who the Grand Imam prays will be a good example for others, through their way of life, their manners and their conduct, so that they [others] can see a true picture of Islam.
