Statistics from Britain’s last census show that of the 1.1 million people living in the U.K., but born abroad, over 600,000 originate from Islamic countries.
According to research specially commissioned by the BBC the 2001 census has revealed that nearly 1.1 million people living in Britain were born abroad 604 000 of them in Islamic countries.
This research comes one week after the Christian Research Organization in Britain [no link found] warned that by the year 2040 mosque attendance would be double that of church attendance.
The Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) [http://www.mcb.org.uk/] has said that it has no definite information on the exact number of Muslims living in the UK but estimated that the figure could be between 1.5 to 2 million people. Last year’s census showed that there are about 1.8 million Muslims in the UK.
British Muslims are concentrated in London Birmingham Manchester and Glasgow. In the seventies a large number of Muslims moved to the United Kingdom from various countries including Cyprus Turkey Yemen Afghanistan Iraq Bosnia and Somalia.
According to the statistics nearly 25% of Londoners are of non-British origin.
