'Umar 'Abd al-Rahman, spiritual leader of the al-Jamā'ah al-Islāmīyah (Islamic Group), called his wife 'Ā'ishah from prison, where he is serving a life term after being convicted of conspiracy to blow up various New York City landmarks.
She reported that he "lives in severe distress...and that his health continues to deteriorate".
Ā'ishah also said that the family refuses to end the sit-in and that they will be stationed outside the U.S. embassy until he is safely back in Cairo.
They said that they will not accept any compromise other than his release. His incarceration has lasted for 18 years.
