Article summary:

On Wednesday, al-Maydān published an interview with Dr. Ahmad al-Tayyib, the Grand Imām of the Azhar.

Al-Tayyib said that those who carried out the bombing of the Church of the Two Saints in Alexandria on New Year’s Day are “enemies of the Prophet.”

The interviewer told the Grand Imām that some Egyptians had commented that his visit to Pope Shenouda after the bombing was confirmation that Muslims had carried out the attack and that the visit was tantamount to an apology.

After being told by the interviewer that some Egyptians consider the Grand Imām’s post-attack visit to Pope Shenouda to be an apology, al-Tayyib responded that he, like Pope Shenouda, is from southern Egypt, where the offering of condolences is a duty.

“I felt that such an act was directed against Egypt as a whole…it was an expression of solidarity between the brothers of one nation,” said al-Tayyib.

Regarding the recent Azhar decision to freeze dialogue with the Vatican following Pope Benedict’s alleged intervention in Coptic affairs, the Grand Imām said that “we could never criticize someone like the Vatican Pope” if his statements did not represent illegitimate interference in sovereign Egyptian matters.

Al-Tayyib added, “We are waiting for the Vatican Pope to make an initiative in directing a good word toward Muslims, which would dispel their fears and remove some of the [negative] holdovers and misunderstandings that arose because of previous statements.”

Article summary:
Rose al-Yūsuf reports that the crisis between the Azhar and the Egypt Peace Lovers Society has escalated.

It says this is because the society, headed by Hānī ‘Azīz, had "jumped onto" the proposal by Dr. Ahmad al-Tayyib, the Grand Imām of the Azhar, for the creation of a joint Muslim-Christian committee to represent both the Azhar and the Coptic Church, which is to be known as the "Family Home."

The dispute began when ‘Azīz invited a number of government ministers and public figures to a meeting that was reported to have been billed as the official launching of the initiative.

“Hānī ‘Azīz did not have the right to announce the launching of the Egyptian Family Home. The first meeting of the preparatory committee of the Family Home will be held at the Azhar next week, in order to select those who will be participants in the Family Home," says the Grand Imām's Councilor Dr. Mahmūd ‘Āzab.

He pointed out that the idea for the initiative was originally formulated by the Azhar and will be officially commenced by the Azhar with the attendance of Grand Imām Dr. Ahmad al-Tayyib and Pope Shenouda III, or whoever may represent him.

[Reviewer: The proposed committee has been named in media reports both as the "Egyptian Family Home" and simply the "Family Home."]

30. Endowments Ministry Official Denies Instructions Given to Mosque Preachers on Sermon Content after Church Attack

Article summary:
People's Assembly member Ahmad al-Sahafi wants to know what the Egyptian Ministry of Endowments has done to encourage imāms to push for acceptance and co-existence between the country's Copts and Muslims, especially in light of the New Year's Day attack on a church in Alexandria.

According to a report by al-Yawm al-Sābi‘, al-Sahafi has submitted a formal question to Endowments Minister Mahmūd Hamdī Zaqzūq regarding how the ministry encouraged imāms “to renew religious discourse and emphasize tolerance between Copts and Muslims.”

The report says, “This raised the following question: Has the ministry issued instructions to imāms to speak about certain issues in the wake of the Alexandria incident?”

This allegation was denied by Shaykh Shawqī ‘Abd al-Latīf, the Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Endowments for Religious Affairs, who told the paper that imāms and preachers are not in need of being alerted to stay away from that which could arouse Fitnah [Tā’ifīyah].

He further said that if the Endowments Ministry had wanted to control what was said in mosques after the Alexandria incident, it would have simply prepared a unified Friday sermon to be used at all mosques across Egypt.

However, ‘Abd al-Latīf  says that Zaqzūq rejected a unified sermon on the grounds that what was said in an area such as Zamalek [an expensive district in Cairo] would not be understood in the same way by those in country villages because of inevitable cultural differences.

6. Dr. Mahmūd Hamdī Zaqzūq: Disputes between Muslims and Christians have to be regarded as ordinary sectarian conflicts between Egyptians

Article summary:

Umniyyah ‘Ādil interviews Egypt’s Minister of Endowments Dr. Mahmūd Hamdī Zaqzūq about the rising sectarian tension between Muslims and Copts in Egypt.

Zaqzūq expresses his doubts in al-fitnah al-tā’ifīyah, describing them as every day disputes between Egyptians. He blames the media for covering only those conflicts that occur between Muslims and Copts, labelling them as al-fitnah al-tā’ifīyah.

He emphasizes how good the relationship between the Church, the Azhar and the Ministry of Endowments has been for centuries, pointing out the three parties’ agreement to maintain dialogue over time. Zaqzūq further highlights the fact that Muslims and Copts have been living in Egypt side by side for fourteen centuries, which makes it difficult for external forces today to drive a wedge between them.

Finally, Zaqzūq reveals his support for a ban of extremist satellite channels and emphasizes his ministry’s role in choosing and hiring a small selection of highly qualified Imāms each year.
