The three authors criticize reporting in the Layman, an American Presbyterian publication, claiming Christians in Egypt are persecuted. They believe the author of this article was ill-informed and provided readers with wrong information. The Layman got the opportunity to respond to their criticism but choose not to, not a sign of confidence in their own work.

Rev. Dr. Michael Shelley is a pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. He first came to Egypt in the summer of 1976. He returned to Egypt in the fall of 1979, and has lived here for a total of twenty-one years. He has been the pastor of churches for expatriates and became in 1998 the Coordinator of the graduate studies program of the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo.
