Authorities detained Hamas Politburo chief Khalid Misha’al, the group’s spokesman Ibrahim Ghosheh and politburo member Musa Abu Marzouk upon their arrival at Queen Alia International Airport at 8:48 a.m. on Wednesday aboard an Emirates airlines flight from Dubai where the Hamas leaders were in transit from Tehran.
The detention came nearly a month after arrest warrants were issued against the Hamas leaders as part of a government crackdown on the Palestinian group which included the closure of its offices in Amman and the arrest of 15 of its activists. The three leaders had been in Iran on what they said was an "official visit" since before the arrest warrants were issued.
The government had repeatedly said that the three wanted men would be arrested if they returned to Jordan. Abu Marzouk, who holds a Yemeni passport was held briefly then asked to head back to Iran. Misha’al and Ghosheh were escorted to the State Security Court under tight security.
