Human rights’ activists accused the officials of the Ministry of Interior of deliberately delaying the taking of any firm actions against the accused in the events of August 1998, in Al-Kosheh. This delay encouraged the unfortunate violent actions that happened recently in the same place.
The activists also asserted that the actions taken now by the police are not sufficient. They explained that the crisis began on December 31[, 1999]. Many police officers were present in the streets of Al-Kosheh; however, 20 persons were violently killed in 48 hours.
[The same information was also given in an article of the same title appearing in Al-Wafd on January 14, 2000, except that in the latter case the last paragraph was as follows:
The activists advised the government to implement democratic practices, and human rights to enhance the respect of the law. Moreover, police action has to be firm in applying the law to ban all violent or fanatic actions.]
