Freedom is the essence and the core of the Shari’a [Islamic law]. Taking this freedom away means taking away the spirit of this nation [the Arabic word shaab is used, not umma], which is [now] controlled by a deformed Islamic ruling. The Islam we want is an Islam that works in the daylight without underground or illegal organizations. Every one should work legally and in public.
If freedom ruled and if the sovereignty of the law became the base of everything, illegality in all its forms would disappear because democracy is capable of embracing all in its bosoms. Islamists would be the first ones to benefit from such a situation. The persecution they face would disappear and they would have a chance to address people and preach to them their ideas without being chased by the security authorities. However, to enjoy such things, they [Islamists] have to befriend the freedom, which would save them from the tyranny they encounter.
Still, making Islamists enjoy freedom and allowing them to work in public does not mean giving them the opportunity to attack the democratic authority under whose umbrella they work. It also does not mean giving them a chance to establish a new authority, whose members belong to the party of God or even to the party of Satan. [They say] you are a human devil if you do not declare your loyalty to Islamists.
Unfortunately such a belief [of being a human devil if not loyal to Islamists] still exists in the minds of some religious people. This means that there is no place for any party disagreeing with the beliefs of the Islamists. Those Islamists are simply aspiring for an Islamic country upon which they alone will be having full control.
How good would it be if Islamists reached the seat of authority through freedom! It never happened before in any country. First, because foreign powers do not want them to have authority and second, because they themselves do not believe in ballot boxes [democracy].
No doubt it is not fair at all to say that most of the followers of the Islamic trend belong to the party of God or the party of Satan. Things have changed in the Islamic society; moderate people started to have a strong voice that can be heard. They have declared their rejection of terrorism and their belief in democracy. Any wise person should encourage them to grow up. However, what happens is the opposite. Many regimes believe that they are more dangerous than terrorists because of their ability to attract people [to themselves] away from the tyrant ruling authorities. Thus we can see that freedom is suffering from a serious problem.
