The Freedom Committee of the Journalists’ Syndicate, headed by Muhammad Abdel Qodos, expressed its deep concern over the State’s stance against freedom of the press and its disregard for the law, the constitution and court rulings.
In a statement that was released a few days ago, the committee denounced the decision by government authorities to block the publishing of the Egyptian newspaper of Al-Dustour, in spite of a final, mandatory court ruling granting permission for the newspaper to be published.
The committee [also] called for an end to the tragedy of Al-Shaab newspaper, whose publishing license was suspended a long time ago, in spite of court rulings calling for an end to the suspension.
The committee stressed that the banning of Al-Dustour and Al-Shaab would not be possible were it not for the Emergency laws, which have been in effect in Egypt for the last 20 years, and which have suspended the application of normal laws and established a police state.
