Since the beginning of the 18th century, the West has reacted to the Arab World through the concept of Orientalism. This concept divides the world into two unequal parts: the East, made up of the Arab countries, and the West, made up of Europe and the U.S. The West always thinks that the East has great capabilities for destruction due to some historical events, among which the ones of September 11 are the most important.
The Kuwaiti magazine Al-Arabi holds an annual forum in order to discuss the gap between the East and the West. The forum discusses issues that are of importance to Arab public opinion. The 2003 forum is titled "The West in the eyes of the Arabs." Al-Arabi Editor-in-Chief Dr. Suleiman Al-Askari says that the objective of the annual forum is to establish dialog and interaction among the Arab intellectuals.
The official and the political circles in Kuwait were interested in the forum.
The Kuwaiti Minister of Information, Mr. Muhammad Abu Al-Hassan, says that the forum discussed the relationship between the East and the West. It is a proper time to discuss this issue, for the relationship between them is tense.
According to Dr. Al-Askari, the importance of this forum is due to the current events that take place in the Arab world.
I agree with Dr. Al-Askari, for we need to understand the concept of the West, whose objective is to control and to exploit the Arab world.
