Dr. Rowan Williams the Church of England’s Archbishop of Canterbury has warned that Muslims are being made scapegoats for the London bombings for which al-Qācida have claimed responsibility. Muslims and mosques in Britain have suffered assaults.

Agence France Presse (AFP) reports that Williams is visiting many Islamic institutions to ensure peaceful relations between Christians and Muslims in Britain. At the end of last week the Archbishop participated in a meeting where Christian leaders Muslim scholars and Jewish rabbis came together to express unity.

Dr. Zakī Badwī head of the Council of Imāms in Britain said that the meeting aimed to demonstrate a joint commitment to resisting terrorism Badwī read some of the Joint Communiqué which has come out of the meeting. He said that “it is evil that we can not justify; we are opposed to it and condemn it strongly.” He added “any person can commit a crime in the name of religion but it is not necessarily permitted by that religion. Some persons commit deeds in the name of Islam but the deeds contradict it completely."

Among the participants at the meeting were the Roman Catholic spiritual leader and Archbishop of Westminster Cardinal Cormac Connor O’Murphy [Editor: Cardinal O’Murphy is not Archbishop of Westminster] David Kofi coordinator of Freedom Churches and Rabbi Jonathan Sykes.

Four mosques in Leeds Belvedere Telford and Birkenhead have suffered arson attacks since the London assaults according to police reports. Muslims have also suffered verbal assaults in streets and the destruction of their houses and cars.
