Apart from two candidates, the Copts running in the parliamentary elections are not enjoying the support of the church nor that of Pope Shenouda III, the Patriarch of the See of Saint Mark.
Some senior clergymen say that Pope Shenouda supported President Husnī Mubārak in the presidential elections and the Copts were expecting to be repaid by putting more Copts on the NDP lists.
NDP Secretary General Safwat al-Sharīf and his assistant Kamāl al-Shazli, however, had a different opinion. They said that the Coptic voting power is quite small due to the absence of political participation, which made them reluctant to include Copts on the party’s lists.
