Discussions are secretly being held between the Coptic Orthodox Church and the National Democratic Party [NDP] to nominate a Coptic NDP candidate for the Shūrá Council elections in Alexandria.

The church asked to nominate a Copt to the third constituency that includes Muharrām Bik, Ghurbāl, and Karmūz which have a large Coptic population.
The NDP had previously nominated Albert Barsūm, a Copt, to the third constituency in the last Shūrá elections. Barsūm won the seat of workers but passed away after only a year and a half of service. He was then succeeded by Muhammad Farīd al-Bannā.

The five constituencies of Alexandria lacked any Coptic representation with the death of Barsūm. This is a situation that the church is trying to overcome.
Among the names expected to be nominated by the NDP are Māhir Khilah and Nājih Zākhir, NDP nominees who lost in the last People’s Assembly elections, Karam Anwar, member of the Laymen’s Council and the Local Council of Alexandria. Also included are Hānī Jamīl, a merchant and Muhsin George a member of the Laymen’s Council.

As for Pope Shenouda, he avoided any discussion about the matter leaving the task informally to the church. A source in the church said that Pope Shenouda asks for nothing for he considers Muslim and Copts his sons, and welcomes any nomination made by the party.
