News about an intention to nominate the present Shūrá Council deputies for the mid-term Shūrá Council elections, which will be held on the 7th of June, were leaked by the National Democratic Party’s [NDP] secretariat in Cairo. The news came before the end of the discussions held between NDP leaders and some Coptic political figures about the number of Coptic candidates who would be selected for the party list in the elections.Such news eliminates the idea of party members’ participation in selecting candidates through electoral colleges on April 27 to select 88 candidates from the constituencies in which the mid-term elections will be conducted.The exclusion of party members from choosing candidates came as a shock to many members, prompting them to hold several meetings in East Cairo to discuss handing in a mass resignation to embarrass the party. They also discussed nominating some members as independents to face the party’s candidates.Copts also participated in these meetings where they expressed their resentment toward the marginalization the role of electoral colleges despite having no representation in them.
