For the third time, Belgian local authorities have banned official employees from wearing the hijāb or any other religious symbols.
The decision came as an addition to a previous government decree to ban the hijāb. It is expected that such a ban on wearing religious symbols will eventually affect all of Belgium after the local council of the city of Liege agreed to apply the decision.
It is noteworthy that the draft law to ban the hijāb as well as other religious symbols was first initiated by the Belgian Flemish Liberal Party and was supported by the Christian Democratic coalition party.
