Maximus, archbishop of St. Athanasius Church, refused an invitation from Pope Shenouda to meet him provided that he, Maximus, take off his clerical garb and give up his position. Subsequently, he issued a strongly-worded statement declaring his condemnation of such an invitation. He stated that he does not need anyone to acknowledge him. He believes that the Coptic Church’s attack on him is due to the “growth of his church.”
