Bishop Marqus of Shubrā al-Khaymah, head of the information committee in the Coptic Orthodox Church denied having objected to Obama’s description of Copts as a minority in his speech that was delivered at Cairo University on June 4, 2009. Bishop Marqus asserted that he had not criticized anything in Obama’s speech.
Bishop Marqus told al-Misrī al-Yawm that the American president’s speech covered different points and can be considered a renovation in American foreign policy.
He added that he could not evaluate Obama’s speech from the church’s point of view because Pope Shenouda is the only one entitled to speak in the name of the Coptic Orthodox Church.
[Reviewer: It was reported that the Coptic Orthodox Church was angry because Obama had described Copts as a minority in Egypt. See AWR press reviews on Obama’s visit to Cairo and his speech at Cairo University in AWR 2009 week 20 art 3 and 5 and articles 3-6 in this issue It is noteworthy that Obama did not mention the word “minority” when he referred to Copts]
