Article summary:

As an intern at the Center for Intercultural Dialogue and Translation, my main aim has been to foster intercultural relations between the West and the Arab world. Integrated in a research team, I had the opportunity to delve into precise topics (such as the issue of mosque building in Egypt), and tackle the legal as well as sociological aspects. I also lead interviews in both English and Arabic with researchers and officials in order to complete the other facet of my work which was based on data-gathering in libraries and documentation and research centers. Furthermore, the daily cooperation with my work colleagues coming from various horizons according to the cross-cultural dynamics of the Center for Intercultural Dialogue and Translation provided me a particular insight on these topics by allowing me to develop a critical mind fed by the confrontation of these various positions built on different cultural backgrounds. The results of these different researches will constitute a useful basis for the further interns and researchers interested in the study of these topics. During the internship I have done some writing from the beginning up until now which are summarized below:

  • At the beginning of this internship I wrote a research paper entitled, "How to role by Islam in a modern state" aiming to study the disclosure of the ruling of a modern state by Islam in order to present a new understanding of modern state formation. This research includes theoretical study on the main concepts of this topic (the Islamic state and a Modern state), followed by an analysis about the relationship between these concepts. This study has shown that despite the fact that today's so-called Islamic states are not based on absolute freedom of faith and a delicate balance between a free market, social justice, human rights and true participatory democracy, the modern secular state in its present form, in fact, is a step on the way to the realization of the true Islamic state.
  • In December, I wrote a report on a conference entitled: "De-radicalization Coalition Building: Lessons from the Past and Future" contributed by Dr. Rasmus Alenius Boserup, Director of the Danish-Egyptian Dialogue Institute. About twelve papers were presented, mostly by Egyptian workers, but with contributions from Norway, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. Arab-West Report, as one of the partners in this conference, asked interns to attend it. I attended it and written an overview on it with the help of some contributions from my work colleagues on discussing certain paperwork of this conference in detail.
  • As a means of following the current events, I have written a report on the issue of adoption which has given rise to divided opinions: adoption is forbidden in Islam, but it is allowed in Christianity. Consequently, the Christians have put forward a law which provides them their right to adopt children and this legislation raised two types of aspects: negative aspect and positive one. My report discussed the negative aspect highlighting the arguments at the Islamic Researches Academy. Furthermore, I have written an article on the debates over Muslim Brotherhood's success abilities in the presidential elections of 2011 in Egypt.
  • In light of the consideration of AWR about the rubric of linguistics of negotiation and cross-cultural communication, Dr. Kees Hulsman, Director of the Center for Intercultural Dialogue and Translation, has conducted an interview with Dr.Hassan Wagieh, the head of the English Language Department at Al-Azhar University, accompanied by two interns from CIDT, myself and a French intern. He spoke about linguistics of negotiation, taxonomic analysis in general, and then he has drawn a cognitive map for the required collective, accumulative and attended agenda to deal with Islamophobia. So, the French intern and I have written a common report on this meeting. He has written on sense of language and I have written on Islamophobia as a case study.
  • I have prepared a statistical analysis on journalism and NGOs workshops. By interaction with the survey questionnaire on both, I summarized the main findings, by using spreadsheet and word document, in two categories that represented in: (1) Motivation: it is considered as an evaluation of the participants' expression about this workshop according to their expectations about it and (2) Feedback: it means that to ask the participants to give their final expression about the workshop in light of their sharing in it. Consequently, the two survey samples have given some percentages which reflected its opinion about these workshops.
  • Father Georges Chehatah Anawati is one of the Dominica Fathers in the Monasticism in Belgium and France who has a lot of activities in the establishment of the Islamic-Christian Dialogue and the dialogue among the different civilizations and cultures. Mrs. Sawsan Gabra Ayoub Khalil, the co-founder of Arab-West Report, has suggested his name and William Sulaym and she lets us choose a person to write his biography. In light of that, I have written a biography on Georges Chehatah Anawati. So, I have read some German and Arabic books for and about him in addition to a lot of articles regarding to his vision about the best way to establish a good religious dialogue and that is relative for the main activities of AWR.
  • As a logical continuation of my internship at CIDT, currently, I am working with two Egyptian and Canadian interns on "Mosque Building" with highlighting some vital topics like: (1) the statistics of mosques in Egypt, (2) the finance of it, (3) the competence of the Endowments Ministry in this issue according to the ten conditions os mosque building and the Draft of the Unified Law for the Houses of Worship and (4) the preparation of preachers and Imams at mosques. On this topic, AWR has held some interviews with public figures and I shared my work colleagues to give a translation for its content and to write some reports on it. Furthermore, I have visited some libraries and brought some available Arabic and English references on this topic:

At the end of this report, I could define some important points for the research on mosque building like: (1) How to distinguish between the competent authority of the construction of mosque and the one which is responsible for the demolition of the violated mosques according to the ten conditions, between the consultative body and the executive one concerning the construction of mosques and between the official Imams graduated from Al-Azhar and non-official ones graduated from government or private universities and train at the Islamic Cultural Centers and (2) to identify that the Endowments Ministry's role in mosque building is not limited to give a license for it, but it supervises on the execution of the construction and the management of the mosque concerning the appointment of Imams and their addresses. Furthermore, I could put mosques in categories according to the main body which manages these mosques. That is meaning that if there is a mosque whose management is out of the oversight of Al-Awqaf, it is considered as a private/ civic mosque. Whereas, if this mosque conveys to Al-Awqaf, it will be a public mosque.
Translation for some available references regarding the construction of mosques so far at some libraries representing in: (1) the central library of Al-Nour Mosque; (2) the central library at Cairo University; (3) The library of the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information; (4) The National Archive of Egypt; (5) The library of Al-Istiqamah Mosque; and (6) The library of Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies.
Finally, I have prepared a plan for the progress in the work on the construction of mosques at CIDT containing some visits to other libraries and some interviews with the specialized persons on the construction of mosques.

  1. Translation for the main ideas of a meeting conducted with Dr.Ahmad Al-Sayih on mosque building at his private department in Nasr City. AWR asked me and two Egyptian and German interns in accompanied with Mr. Jayson Casper to discuss some questions relating to mosque building. So, I have prepared a writing translation for the main idea of this discussion, my Egyptian colleague has done the same thing but oral and then my German colleague has written a report on this discussion.
  2. Translation for half of the main ideas of a meeting conducted with Sheikh Fouad Abdul Azeem Muhammad, Deputy Minister of Al-Awqaf for the mosques' affairs and the Holy Qur'an on mosque building. Sheikh Fouad has discussed two topics, namely: (1) The competence of Al-Awqaf in the construction of mosques according to the ten conditions and some statistics of mosques in Egypt and (2) The renewal of religious discourse. In light of that, I have translated the second part of this discussion and there's an Egyptian intern has translated the first part and then she has written a report on it.
  3. A report on an interview with the Chairman of the Central Administration of Al-Siera/Curriculum and Al-Sunnah Al-Nabawiah/ the Prophetic Sunnah and the General Director of the Manuscripts and the Heritage Books at the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, highlighting on the provisions of the construction of mosques, the finance of mosque building, the preparation of Imams and preachers and the Draft of the Unified Law for the Worship Places
  4. A report on a meeting with Dr.Salim Mahmud Abdul Jalil, Deputy of Al-Awqaf Minister for Da'awa Affairs at the Religious Endowments Ministry. On this topic, we asked him some questions, namely: to which extent the Endowments Ministry organize the construction of mosques according to the ten conditions? What is the main competent body which is responsible for the finance of mosque building? How does Al-Awqaf organize mosque building before the construction according to the ten conditions? How does Al-Awqaf organize the management of mosque after the construction concerning the preparation of Imams?
