In the interview with the active
Coptic layman Kamāk Zākhir Mūsá, October tackles different subjects related
to the laymen group’s activities. October calls Zākhir the “chief” of the laymen
group.
Zākhir speaks about the history and present activity of laymen in the church. He
explained that the activity of laymen in the Coptic Orthodox church started in the 1990s, however,
it was not properly organized. Zākhir announced that the fourth laymen conference will take
place soon. He stated that it is no coincidence that the conference will be held at this time in
particular when Pope Shenouda III is suffering from health problems.
Zākhir explained
the laymen’s stances toward the different church-related issues they tackle. Those are issues like
the administration of the church, financial affairs personal status regulations, regulations for
choosing the pope and other relevant issues.
Zākhir clarified that the main aim of the
“laymen front” is to ensure that laymen have a more active role in the church. He added that in
the current reality of the Coptic Orthodox Church the clergy rules and the laity follows, which is
“incorrect” in his opinion.
