Ibrāhīm ‘Īsá, editor-in-chief of al-Dustūr newspaper, has the talent to compare and contrast between differing views. He finds no difficulty defending the Muslim Brotherhood, its ideas and agendas while befriending Najīb Sāwīris and even presenting programs on OTV—a satellite channel owned by Sāwīris which is usually attacked by the Muslim Brotherhood.

‘Īsá has recently insulted Christians in his article published in al-Dustūr last Monday entitled “Churches of the National Democratic Party.” Three things were particularly insulting:

-         The accusation of Christian hypocrisy when dealing with the government, because many people say that they are afraid of expressing their ideas in public.
-         The further accusation that the Church is mingling in the political sphere, for 2,400 Egyptian churches will soon become headquarters for the National Democratic Party (NDP).
-         that the suggestions that Christians are suffering from Stockholm complex—a condition in which people get used to oppression.

Sāmih Mahrūs commented on these accusations, saying that it seems ‘Īsá was talking about those not in Egypt. He further mentioned that what ‘Īsá wrote shows a separation between ‘Īssá and the common life people have in Egypt.

In the end, Mahrūs adds that Christians are part of society complete with all its political and intellectual trends. It is not fair to make generalizations about all Christians, for there are Christians in both the NDP and its opposition.
