The author believes that the Church pursues a kind of political extortion through expatriate Copts, on whom the Church has great dominance. At the same time, the Church, represented by Pope Shenouda, internally supports the regime and the expected successor Jamāl Mubārak, and plays a large political role. With regard to al-Barādi‘ī, the ex-president of the International Atomic Energy Agency, some of the Pope’s assistants seem to support and welcome him, especially because of al-Barādi‘ī’s claim to alleviate many of the Coptic issues. The author points out that al-Barādi‘ī seeks the support of expatriate Copts.
