Sāmih Fawzī comments on the situation between Georgette Qillīnī and Majdī Ayyūb

Article full text:

No sooner had Georgette Qillīnī return from Naj‘ Hammādī after the church accident on Christmas Day than she started a fierce attack on Majdī Ayyūb, Governor of Qina. Qillīnī accused Ayyūb of being a liar. She added that Christians living in Qinā** do not like him and hope he will leave his position soon.

Regardless of whether Qillīnī and Ayyūb are right or not, these comments reveal the critical situation of the ‘Christian governor’ in which the society placed a man in a sensitive position when dealing with religious issues. “I remember I asked Rose al-Yūsuf to stop describing Majdī Ayyūb as the ‘Christian governor’,” Fawzī comments, “and to look at his professional experience instead.”

Fawzī added that he does not aim at discussing the Naj‘ Hammādī incident. “All I want to say is that the ‘Christian governor’ is now in a critical situation created by society.” People expect that appointing a Christian governor is a step towards putting an end to religious discrimination. On the contrary, this is simply an extension of this discrimination.

Governor Majdī Ayyūb is in a precarious position. Christians believe he is against then while he is completely sensitive to their issues. What is needed now is a study to examine what happened to the Egyptian character and its psychology towards the ‘other’ who is of a different religion. This report would provide a better focus on the real problems.
