Zubūn reports on conflicts between the Greek Patriarch Theophilus III and Arab Christian institutions that threaten the unity of the church.
The relations of some Arab Christians with Patriarch Theophilus were negatively affected following accusations of his alleged involvement in giving plots of land that belong to the church to a Jewish organization, and ignoring the restoration of other lands he had accused his predecessor of Irinus I of handing to Jews. Patriarch Theophilus denies the accusations. The Patriarchate had announced that it hired the Jewish organization to build dorms for the Christian youth in Jerusalem.
Marwān al-Tūbāsī, deputy of the Palestinian Ministry of Tourism declared in a conference held in Bethlehem by the Arab Orthodox Institutions [an association that includes 19 elected Orthodox institutions]: “It is not possible to keep silent. If this reluctance continues, we will declare an Arabic Orthodox Church.”
In contrast, Patriarch Theophilus accuses some “foreign parties” of trying to weaken him and hinder his efforts to restore the church’s lands that have been taken by Jews.
