Participants in the Forum for Dialog between Cultures, held in the Anglican Foundation, asserted that developing cultural discourse is a necessity to enhance national unity.
Al-Sayyid Yāsīn asserted that intellectuals failed to find a public discourse that would reach all people, and that there are communication problems between both sides. He also added that it is important to draw a map of social change that took place in Egypt.
Dr. Ahmad Zāyyid, professor of political sociology at Cairo University, explained that social unity cannot be attained unless people manage to admit the presence of the “other,” and believe in the importance of citizenship. On the other hand,
Shaykh Sālim ‘Abd al-Jalīl, secretary general of the Ministry of Islamic Awqāf, pointed out that religious discourse is not religion itself. On the contrary, it is an explanation of religion. He added that this discourse plays an important role in enhancing communication between different members of society.
Dr. Andrea Zakī, vice director of the Anglican Foundation, said that the illusion of conflict between religion and science should be resolved because science is ever changing.
