The Family Court in al-Muntazah, Alexandria, issued a verdict that repeals the presidential decree which appointed Shenouda as the Pope of Alexandria in 1985. The verdict was issued relying on a former presidential decree issued by President al-Sadāt in 1981, which discharged the Pope from his office. Lawyer Sharīf Jād Allah, who filed against the Pope, mentioned that the decree to re-appoint the Pope contradicts constitutional regulation with regard to papal procedures of nomination and elections. This verdict comes after the Supreme Administrative Court decision that permits the re-marriage of Copts, and is added to the current crises of the Orthodox Church.
