Kamāl Farīd, a professor of Coptic language at the Coptic Studies Institute, states that Bishop Demetrius, head of Abū Fānā monastery, hindered his PhD as he was a member of the committee formed to discuss the researcher and his dissertation.

The bishop rejected a chapter in the dissertation which states that the Copts did not pronounce the Coptic language correctly.
