In his weekly sermon, Pope Shenouda gives the church’s opinion on the issue of civil marriage. 

Pope Shenouda of Alexandria considers civil marriage as adultery, because it contradicts the Gospel teachings. He stresses that those people who want to leave Christianity merely to get a divorce are weak believers. He also states that the church canons and teachings do not violate the civil state.
