Salafists started a campaign to defend themselves against the constant attacks of Ahmad al-Tayyib, the grand shaykh of the Azhar. Salafī websites have published a number of articles defending the salafī approach, the most significant of which is an article published on 'Abd al-Mun'im al-Shahāt's website in which he called upon the Azhar to stop fighting salafism and instead attack their common opponents, such as the groups of Christianization, seculars, philosophers, Shiites and Sufists.
