Fighting poverty, the main reason to blame on Muslims' ignorance and lagging behind to keep up with progress and technology, is an unobserved Islamic farīdah (duty).
The author added that malnutrition and poverty are some of the main problems facing the Islamic nation, and may lead to many crimes like robbery and adultery.
Ahmad 'Abd al-Hādī Talkhān, an Islamic researcher, said that the reason for poverty and begging is ribā (usury), which is prohibited in the Qur'ān.
Talkhān added that Islam had solutions for poverty, one of them can be applying the Islamic sharī'ah obligation of zakāh (alms-giving), an obligatory charity tax of 2.5% annually.
