Ahmad 'Abd al-Hādī Talkhān, an Islamic researcher, said that the reason for poverty and begging is ribā (usury), which is prohibited in the Qur'ān.

Talkhān added that Islam had solutions for poverty, one of them can be applying the Islamic sharī'ah obligation of zakāh (alms-giving), an obligatory charity tax of 2.5% annually.
