Archpriest 'Abd al-Masīh Basīt of the Virgin Mary Church in Musturud said calls for opening and searching churches should be exclusively addressed to Coptic Orthodox Pope Shenouda III.
"Churches, however, have nothing to hide because they are only houses of worship," Basīt said in statements to the independent daily newspaper al-Misrī al-Yawm.
He dismissed reports that he encouraged Christians to leave Egypt and emigrate outside the country. "All I said was that a large number of Egyptians Christians might be forced to emigrate abroad in light of the recent sectarian incidents."
