Article summary:

Journalist Sanā' Sa'īd interviewed Dr. Ahmad al-Tayīb, Azhar's Grand Shaykh, who, commenting on the protests, said that civil disobedience sometimes can wreak havoc to the nation as a whole.

Sa'īd asked him how to activate the Azhar's document and stress the right Islam, al-Tayīb said that this document was issued after several meetings with the elite in different social, cultural and media fields and hearing all point of views.

Tayīb expressed his pleasure that the Cabinet adopted this document and decided to consider it one of the political documents because by this, the document will have a political dimension.

The Azhar is working to publish this document in English, Arabic and French in two fields: first; media, mosques, churches, information centers, colleges, clubs, embassies in Egypt and Egyptian embassies abroad; the second field will be through discussions on what was included in the document.

The Grand Shaykh added that mosques do not need a unified law for building houses of worship because there are indeed laws (by the Cabinet) that define the regulations of building mosques, another law can be issued to regulate the building of churches on the other hand.

As for the Family House initiative by the Azhar, Tayīb said that it was meant to solve problems that arise between the citizens of one nation without getting to the official authority.

Clerics can meet together and have a wise discussion in an atmosphere of tolerance. He added that any laws that criminalize discrimination will not be enough without real understanding beyond citizens.
