Eyewitnesses said that a Muslim motorcycle driver hit a Coptic boy. A struggle erupted on both sides that escalated. 

Saint George's Church was full of worshippers who had come to attend the first day of Nahdet Eid al-‘Azrā’ [Virgin Mary’s Nahda - prayers that take place in the Coptic Orthodox Church daily during the feast of the Virgin Mary]. The worshippers then panicked.
