'Umar 'Abd al-Rahman, spiritual leader of the al-Jamā'ah al-Islāmīyah (Islamic Group), called his wife 'Ā'ishah from prison, where he is serving a life term after being convicted of conspiracy to blow up various New York City landmarks.
She reported that he "lives in severe distress...and that his health continues to deteriorate".
