Article summary:

A report on the situation of religious freedoms around the world - and countries that have failed to effectively protect them - was issued yesterday (September 14) by the U.S. Department of State. Middle Eastern and African countries were numerous, and Egypt was one of these countries to be reported on, noting the sectarian strife plaguing the country in the post-Mubārak era.

Article full text:

The report reviews the sectarian violence that took place in Egypt after the fall of former president Husnī Mubārak, which was at its most violent last May, and resulted in the deaths of 15 people.

The report criticized both Pope Shenouda III's opinion that the church should reject all outside interference in Christian affairs, by saying that the solution to the problems of Copts is well-known, in the adoption of the rule of law and citizenship.

The Salafī Front criticized the U.S. department of state for putting Egypt on the list of countries with restricted freedoms, considering it as interference in Egypt's internal affairs and demanded that the U.S. respect the freedoms of the country. A spokesman for the Salafī Front described how America is trying to impose its foreign freedoms on Arab and Muslim countries, and accused it of meddling in Egypt's internal affairs.
