Grand Shaykh of the Azhar Ahmad al-Tayīb warned of Western plans to divide the Arab Muslim world into smaller states and spark "detestable ethnic differences."
"I warn all Iraqis of falling into the detestable ethnic traps. The Iraqis need one title, not several ones like Shiites, Kurds and Sunnis," Tayīb said during a meeting on September 28 with an Iraqi Kurdish delegation representing the ministry of awqāf (endowments) in the Iraqi Kurdistan region.
He criticized attempts to "tickle the sentiments of men through the love of Āl al-Bayt (the Prophet Muhammad's Household) in order to insult and insolently attack the sahābah (the Prophet's companions).
