Less than 8 days after criticizing the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) in his weekly sermon and accusing it of killing protesters in Maspero incidents and of running over some of them by armored vehicles, Pope Shenouda III retracted his stance saying, ”Up till now, we do not recognize the killers of the protesters.” He added during a meeting with the martyrs’ families on Thursday noon in the Papal Residence, “We will not keep silent about the martyrs’ blood, and we are in continuous dialogue with the officials, informed them of many claims in this regard and delivered videos and evidence on the integrity of our claims to them.”

The pope’s words stirred the anger of the martyrs’ families who requested a lawsuit be filed against the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF). However, Pope Shenouda replied “Against whom you will file a lawsuit? .. we resort to God in our matters.” He added “Please do not follow Naguib Gabriel because you will not prove anything before the court.”

 

In response to the claim of some martyrs’ families to resort to the international courts, Pope Shenouda said “if we make so, we will be accused of treason.” The meeting witnessed increasing claims from martyrs’ families and attendants that an independent committee is required to be formed to investigate the incidents.
