"Anyone who speaks about an alternative homeland for Copts lacks sound understanding," Pope Shenouda, patriarch of Alexandria and the See of Saint Mark, commented.

Pope Shenouda explained that he dismissed such an idea a long time ago during the regime of President Sādāt when it was suggested that Copts may only reside in Upper Egypt.
