The fitnah started when the Coptic man wanted to build a fence in front of his house that will disrupt the traffic. The Muslim man refused which escalated to a fight that led to the latter death.

In al-Ahrām, page 14, December 1, 2011, the Azhar initiative Family House states that Sohag fitnah is not sectarian.
