Article summary:

The Salafī al-Nūr (Light) Party's higher committee issued a decision prohibiting 'Abd al-Mun'im al-Shahāt, the official spokesman for the Salafī Da'wah Group, from making any statements to the media after recent statements in which he lashed out at Nobel laureate Najīb Mahfūz's literature and accused him of having spread vice.

Yusrī Hammād, al-Nūr's media spokesman, said Shahāt as well as members of the party were banned from making any statements, adding the only persons expressing al-Nūr's vision and opinions are its official spokesmen.

"Shahāt's statements damaged the party's position in the runoffs, causing it to lose 20 seats, although he was only expressing his personal, not at all the party's, views," said Hammād.

Meanwhile, Hammād said among the reasons his party did not achieve more successes in the election was that some thought that presidential hopeful Shaykh Hāzim Abū Ismā'īl was categorized as a Salafist although he has nothing to do whatsoever with Salafism nor that he is a member of al-Nūr.
