A total of 331 detainees were released in commemoration of this year’s anniversary of the 6th of October war. Last month on the occasion of Eid el-Adha, around 100 detainees were freed under a presidential decree. Earlier in July, Sisi pardoned hundreds of prisoners on the occasion of Eid el-Fitr which marks the end of Ramadan. Alessandra Bajec writes this "doesn’t camouflage the unchanged malaise in Egypt’s justice system, nor does it send a convincing message abroad."
