Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue for a Sustainable Future

June 25 - July 06, 2018

The Center for Arab West Understanding is organizing with Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development a summer school entitled: Interreligious and Intercultural Dialogue for a Sustainable Future. The dates are June 25 – July 6, 2018.

Students are now invited to apply. Program fees are 100 Euros (or the equivalent in dollars or EgP) for students studying outside Egypt, and 500 EgP for Egyptian students studying inside Egypt. The difference in fees is because students in Egypt usually have to get by on very small sums of money. We of course would also very much like to see Egyptian students participate in this summer school. If, for whatever reason, this contribution would be too much for the applicant, he or she can request a scholarship covering the program costs. Scholarship applicants must provide a detailed CV, a letter of interest, and demonstrate financial need.

If you are not a student, we would appreciate if you could share this opportunity with students you know might be interested.

The focus of the summer school is on Muslim-Christian relations, a subject that is, unfortunately, often misreported. The summer school will provide an overview of historical relations between Muslims and Christians, activities that show dialogue and cooperation, discussions on a variety of religious and social topics, and much, much more. We are extremely glad that the SGP party is willing to contribute to the costs so that students do not need to pay more than the basic program fees. Participants in the summer school will be hosted in the dormitories of the Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development under the condition that there will be no mixing of accommodation between male and female participants. Heliopolis University will also provide meals at the university, and excursions that will be organized to Egypt’s pyramids, the Egyptian museum (with guidance to antiquities that are related to Egypt in the Bible) and the Salam Medical Center in Qanatir, north of Cairo (a center which hosts a unique dialogue program.) The costs of entrance fees and meals and drinks during excursions are to be paid by the participants.

The SGP party is a small Dutch party that is greatly interested in obtaining accurate information about the relations between Muslims and Christians in different countries. The SGP is also helping us with hosting some major speakers, such as Mr. Bas Belder, member of the European Parliament. We are also getting excellent speakers from Egypt. Thus, the summer school promises to be a great learning experience for all participants.

Students are expected to report about discussions taking place, and these will be shared with you in Arab-West Report. Students who have completed the summer school will obtain a certificate at the end of the program.

The number of participants will cap at 20 students. This limited number is so that participants can truly obtain personal attention during the course of the program. The aim is also that participants are as diverse as possible; Christian, Muslim or of whatever conviction, Egyptians, and non-Egyptians preferably coming from as wide a variety of different countries as possible.

We hope you will join us for what is certain to be a stimulating and educational summer school in a spectacular setting!

To apply applicants must submit their current CV and a letter of motivation (in English).
