Today is the first day of Ramadan, the ninth month in the Muslim lunar calendar, during which Muslims fast around the globe.

This means avoiding immoral acts, as well as abstaining from eating and drinking from sun-rise to sun-set. That is hard in a hot country like Egypt. Ramadan is also a month during which Muslims focus on acts of worship such as prayer. During this holy month, mosques after ifṭār hold nightly prayers called Tarāwīḥ.

In non-Muslim countries one usually does not notice much about Ramadan, however this is quite different in a country like Egypt. One sees decorations in the streets. People congregate for ifṭār, the breaking of the feast at sun-set.

Ramadan is a month of charity as well. The 'charity' or 'mercy' tables seen all around Cairo's streets during the holy fasting month of Ramadan provide those who are in need with an open invitation to a free ifṭār meal.

Work also slows down. The most necessary things are done and much is postponed.

For non-Muslims this is a good moment to wish Muslims a happy Ramadan, and show respect for their fasting.

To our Muslim readers: wishing you a blessed Ramadan.

Ramadan Karim!
