The issue of celebrating the mulid of Abū Hasera aroused the anger of the inhabitants
of Demtawa, where his tomb
is located. There are many conflicting stories about the reality of his
character. Some stories say that he was one
of the prophets that were sent to the Israelites in Egypt and
others say that he was a Muslim man. The inhabitants
of Demtawa asked officials not to allow Jews to hold
this celebration because it involves behavior that is against
Egyptian customs and tradition. Newspapers
pointed out that there was a strong tendency not to permit Jews to
celebrate the mulid of Abū Hasera in
order to keep people calm, in view of recent events in Palestine.
